ARTIST STATEMENT

I work and draw in a direct manner, and match my artwork to a combined vision of memory, reality and dreams.

Usually, I start making a series of drawings of the same subject and then select and combine them to make a finished piece of art. I think of each of these drawings as a single pass at seeing the subject, and combined, as a perception of that subject. These images should open up and display an underlying order.

These images do not deny the value of representational means, but give weight to all the perceptions in an attempt to reach a closer approximation to the experience of seeing. They are intended to be contemplated, and follow in the tradition of the earliest art – to see the world and its patterns, and to reconcile our inner and outer selves.

Idea Enhancement:

The Idea Enhancement Project is a series of public exhibits exploring the use of visual imagery to stimulate creative thinking.

These exhibits will be in libraries, galleries, cafeterias, waiting rooms, and other places where people are able to stop and contemplate the images. The project will use panels of original art with a variety of themes to channel the people’s thoughts into specific areas of Education, Science and Art. I will then collect the viewer’s impressions with survey sheets and use those to evolve images for future exhibits.

This project will use the visual arts as a practical tool to help meet the need for creative ideas in all fields of endeavor.

The Idea Enhancement Project is a sponsored project of the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA). NYFA is a 501(c)3, tax exempt organization founded in 1971 to work with the arts community throughout New York State to develop and facilitate programs in all disciplines. As the project’s fiscal sponsor, NYFA will receive grants on behalf of the Idea Enhancement Project, ensure the use of grant funds in accordance with the grant agreements, and provide program or financial reports as required.
